My name is Noel Kayo, MD.

I have created BRIDGING THE GAP EDUCATION to educate the most vulnerable people in our community - those with low incomes and little education of various age groups. Healthcare has not always been a priority in their lives, and preventive measures have been absent.

We address the shortage of minority physicians by offering scholarships and mentorships to promising minority students interested in a career in the medical field.

A disproportionately higher number of Americans, particularly from minority and lower socioeconomic groups, are not equally enjoying the benefit of the advances made in preventive care for diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Due to the limited time physicians can spend with their patients, a knowledge gap exists. Patients often do not have an accurate understanding of their diagnosis or the recommended treatments.

Our goals are to help patients understand their condition(s), explain how the prescribed pharmaceutical treatment works, and empower them to make lifestyle changes relevant to their health while being informed and taking an active part in the decision-making process. By building knowledge and understanding of the physiologic basis of disease, patients feel empowered to make more informed decisions about their healthcare. Also, by providing information and resources about healthy lifestyle choices, patients are better equipped to make decisions that will promote healthier habits on a daily basis.

Actions Bridging The Gap takes to achieve goals:

  • We assess and identify health knowledge gaps and focus on educating patients using common language and a culturally sensitive approach in a pressure-free environment.
  • We screen participants for high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors (waist circumference, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking) and educate them about their specific diagnoses when applicable.
  • We facilitate access to healthcare providers for our participants and help them navigate through our healthcare system, which can be difficult for our elderly population and for those with limited literacy skills or resources.
  • We explain the medical treatments of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease as well as the possible side effects of medications.
  • We collaborate with local organizations to provide resources and support for the implementation of lifestyle changes. Our nutritional counseling is provided by professional nutritionists and consists of educating people about healthy food choices to prevent high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as disease progression.
  • We collaborate with local organizations to help those in need access heart-healthy foods.
  • We educate participants about healthy eating patterns, adequate portion sizes for different foods, exercise, and smoking cessation to optimize health outcomes and prevent diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
  • We follow standard research protocols to collect data and follow up on the trend of our participants' bio-metrics. Bridging the Gap Education collaborates with the American Medical Association to inform grade-school-level minority students about the medical profession and to encourage them to consider the medical field as a career choice. A scholarship fund is being established to support gifted students in this endeavor.
  • We build networking relationships with local community groups who invite us to their health events to educate their members.
  • We collaborate with local agencies involved in similar programs in our region to organize health education for all age groups.
  • We address educational topics requested or best suited for members of a particular group and tailor our presentations to their needs.

Any donation is very welcome and much appreciated.

Thanks a lot and stay healthy!

I support Bridging the Gap Education because I believe their preventive work through screening and education are the best cure for diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Their focus on the low socioeconomic status group and children is particularly interesting.
